Real-Time Graphics Under Pressure for Unrivaled

Summary

When Media Pro set out to launch the Unrivaled tournament, a bold new chapter for women’s 3-on-3 basketball,  they tapped Mango Soft to bring real-time stats and graphics to life on the LED screens of their custom-built Wayfair Arena in Miami. What we delivered wasn’t just software. It was a live, evolving system built and rebuilt on the fly, game after game.

With data flying in from Scorebreak.io and old-school RS232 feeds from Daktronics, nothing could be fully tested until the tournament went live. There were no dry runs. Just packed game days, an arena full of fans, and engineers rewriting code courtside to keep everything running. Stress? Absolutely. But the reason it all worked? Teamwork.

Background

Media Pro & Wayfair Arena

Media Pro, with its global production muscle, built Wayfair Arena as a fully equipped studio venue—two basketball courts, control rooms, the works—to host the Unrivaled tournament. It was more than a venue; it was a broadcast lab designed for high-octane, visually driven sports events.

Unrivaled

Unrivaled is changing the game for women’s basketball. A new format, WNBA stars, and national broadcasts on TNT gave this tournament real momentum. The vibe was fast, player-first, and all about energy — and the screens had to match that.

Mango Soft

Known for wrangling messy data into clean real-time experiences, Mango Soft came in to make sure all that action on the court translated to compelling visuals across the stadium — live stats, dynamic score graphics, player highlights, and more.

The challenge

No Dress Rehearsals

The Setup

We were asked to build a system that combined live player stats from Scorebreak.io and scoreboard data from Daktronics — an older serial-based protocol — and turn that into clean, real-time graphics on multiple LED formats.

The Catch?

There was no way to simulate the real environment. The only time we could test our system was during actual games.

Every match was a stress test.

What looked like a smooth, polished production on screen was backed by engineers making real-time fixes mid-game. One match in, and we were tweaking data filters. Two games in, we rewrote parts of the rendering logic. At one point, one screen just wouldn’t align with the others — until one of our devs figured out a workaround during halftime.

It was constant adaptation, constant patching, and very little sleep. But the team held it together.

The Technical Curveballs:
  • Daktronics RS232 parsing — Legacy data stream, meet modern browser.

  • Network latency — Stats kept shifting as Scorebreak data got corrected seconds later.

  • Unique game logic — Target scores in the fourth quarter that changed in real time.

  • Hardware quirks — Some screens just didn’t want to behave the same way as others.

THE SOLUTION

Built Like a Band on Tour

FLEXIBILITY

Adaptability Was Everything

Nothing was locked in. We built for flexibility because every day brought new tweaks from the league or the production team. One day, it was a new graphic. The next, a rule change that affected scoring logic.

DYNAMIC CONTROL

The Tech Stack in Action:

  • Web-based app with multi-threaded support (Web Workers, Service Workers)
  • Custom backend services on AWS
  • Redundant data streams using both REST and WebSockets
  • Smart filters to ignore old or repeated data
  • Dynamic visualizations, including score bars that literally “grew” as teams got closer to the target

CUSTOMIZATION

Custom Tools & Workflow

We pulled in our own modular tech from Mango Draw, using keyboard triggers and an Elgato Stream Deck to give the control room operators tight, tactile control over the graphics.

the results

Every Pixel, In Place

Despite the chaos under the hood, the fan-facing side was smooth and sharp. The system held together, not because it was perfect, but because the people behind it didn’t let it fail. The system had to be able to display the unique rules of the 4th quarter and have the correct data displayed, to represent Unrivaled’s brand in a professional way.

Real-time graphics that actually kept up

Live stats, score bars, player callouts, leaderboards.

Adaptability across screen shapes

Big main screen, vertical side panels, even bar-format displays.

Social media-friendly outputs

The media team could pull graphics live for posts and stories.

Strong visual impact

Organizers and attendees gave the graphics high marks for quality and clarity.
